The Writing of Ronald L. Herron

"Don't tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass."   ~ Anton Chekhov

A blank page conjures so many questions it can frighten a writer. What should I write about? How should I begin? Believe me, facing those questions often does not make them easier to answer. You face them each time as if it's the first time. You know you must not bore readers with the fact it is raining; you have to make them feel the rain. If you want them to continue reading, you cannot merely tell them the moon is shining; you have to make them see that glint of light. Chekov's quote (above) may be the single greatest piece of advice for any creative writer: Show, don't tell.

When a writer understands this, he realizes the ultimate test of a storytelling effort doesn't rest with the author at all. It's solely in the mind of the reader. That's why the most satisfying comments I receive all include something similar to the phrase: "So, what happens next?"

That eagerness to know more about the story means I'm headed in the right direction.
